The Commissioner of Police for the Akwa Ibom Police Command, Nigeria, Waheed Ayilara, has died. Ayilara passed away early this morning at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja.
Ayilara, who was formerly the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, Lagos, had recently attended the wedding of his boss’s son and a senior colleague’s retirement and birthday ceremony in Lagos. The news of his sudden death has left his colleagues and acquaintances in shock, as Ayilara appeared to be in high spirits during the celebrations.
A source close to the late Commissioner recounted, “CP Ayilara was in high spirits during the celebration, showing no signs of illness. His sudden passing has left many struggling to come to terms with the loss.” Another colleague added, “We were together at the party, and he was his usual self, laughing and joking. We can’t believe he’s gone.”
According to sources, Ayilara walked into the hospital on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, a day after the party, for surgery. Sadly, he did not survive the procedure and died this morning. His colleagues have described him as a kind and dedicated officer whose leadership and mentorship will be deeply missed.
“He was a true leader and a mentor to many of us,” said one of the unit heads at the State CID, Yaba.
Ayilara’s death has come as a significant loss to the police force, where he was respected for his dedication and leadership.
