Nigerian Senate President Godswill Akpabio has cautioned the public against making uninformed comments about Senate affairs, urging Nigerians to familiarize themselves with parliamentary rules before engaging in debates.
Akpabio issued the warning while receiving a delegation from the Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities Youth Leaders Forum in Abuja. His statement follows the recent suspension of Kogi Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for violating Senate rules, a decision he emphasized was unanimously supported by lawmakers.
Expressing concern over the increasing trend of uninformed analysis on television and social media, Akpabio stated, “You should seek the facts before making public statements. We advise members of the public to stop misquoting the rules of the Senate.”
He further criticized individuals outside the legislature who attempt to interpret Senate procedures, comparing it to “a herbalist trying to quote the Bible or someone unfamiliar with Islamic teachings attempting to interpret the Qur’an.”
The suspension of Akpoti-Uduaghan has sparked public debate, with growing calls for her reinstatement and petitions against Akpabio’s leadership. Meanwhile, the federal government has reportedly intervened to address the controversy amid rising protests.
