Senate President Godswill Akpabio has formally petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, calling for the investigation and prosecution of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan over her claims that he plotted to assassinate her. The petition, dated April 3 and copied to the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, describes the allegations as “baseless, politically motivated, and capable of inciting public unrest.”
Akpabio’s legal action follows Akpoti-Uduaghan’s public statement on April 1 in Kogi State, where she accused the Senate President of conspiring with former Governor Yahaya Bello and current Governor Usman Ododo to orchestrate her killing. The suspended senator alleged the plot was designed to appear as though her constituents were responsible.
In the petition, Akpabio dismissed the claims as “a heinous lie and calculated blackmail,” warning that such unsubstantiated allegations threaten national stability. He urged the police to invoke laws on criminal defamation, false accusations, and conduct likely to breach public peace.
The Senate President’s move intensifies an ongoing political feud, coming weeks after Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension from the Senate Committee on Diaspora and NGOs. Police authorities have acknowledged receipt of the petition but have not indicated when investigations might commence. The senator’s supporters maintain her allegations were a plea for protection amid rising political tensions in Kogi State.
