Senate President of Nigeria, Godswill Akpabio has issued an apology to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan following controversial remarks he made during a recent Senate session.
Last week, while addressing Akpoti-Uduaghan, Akpabio had remarked that the Senate was not a “nightclub,” prompting backlash on social media and criticism from women’s groups for perceived sexism.
During Tuesday’s plenary, Akpabio addressed the issue, stating, “I will not intentionally denigrate any woman and I always pray that God will uplift women. Distinguished Senator Natasha, I want to apologise to you.”
He added, “The interest shown on social media shows that we have enemies. I felt I should tender a public apology to you. I do not mean any harm. People should concentrate on things that will move this country forward.”
In response to allegations circulating online about his personal life, Akpabio denied claims that he has “numerous girlfriends,” asserting, “I have only one wife and she is enough for me.”
Akpabio’s comments and subsequent apology reflect ongoing tensions within the Senate and broader public scrutiny of political figures’ behavior.
