After more than 15 years of inactivity, Sierra Leone’s national carrier, Air Sierra Leone, has resumed scheduled flight operations between Freetown and Lagos.

The airline returned to Nigeria in partnership with Nigerian airline XEJet, which is providing technical support and three operational aircraft for the service.

Speaking at the inaugural flight ceremony at Lagos Airport on Wednesday, Air Sierra Leone’s General Manager, Edgard Lacle, expressed excitement about the airline’s return.

Lacle confirmed that the airline has received approval to operate three weekly flights—on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays—with plans to increase frequency based on passenger demand. The first flight into Lagos carried 36 passengers.

“The connection between Sierra Leone and Nigeria is strong, particularly in trade,” Lacle said. “Tourism also plays a key role, and we will adjust our operations as market demand changes.”

XEJet’s Chief Executive Officer, Iza Emmanuel, described the airline’s return as a “rebirth” for Air Sierra Leone in Nigeria, calling it a symbol of “hope, progress, and resilience” for the West African nation.

“With the Sierra Leonean flag once again in the skies, today marks a significant milestone,” Emmanuel said. “This partnership reflects the strong ties between Sierra Leone and Nigeria and our shared vision for growth and connectivity.”

The airline’s return is expected to strengthen business and tourism links between both countries, offering travelers a direct and convenient flight option between Lagos and Freetown.
