The Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government Area in Lagos State, Ganiyu Egunjobi, has publicly endorsed the emergence of Lagos Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa’s son, Abdulganiyu Obasa, as the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmanship candidate for the upcoming council elections. Egunjobi declared that the young Obasa “deserves to succeed me,” dismissing allegations of imposition and defending the legitimacy of the May 10 APC primaries.

Addressing concerns raised by some APC members who protested the primaries, accusing Speaker Obasa of planting loyalists and family members as flagbearers, Egunjobi described the demonstrations as politically motivated and orchestrated by “political desperadoes.” He pointed out that some of the aggrieved aspirants only recently returned to the party and lacked the moral and constitutional right to contest.

Egunjobi praised the electoral committee and party leadership for conducting a credible process, noting that opposition to the results was typical of political actors unhappy with outcomes unfavorable to them. He highlighted Abdulganiyu Obasa’s qualifications, noting that he is a PhD student who has been actively contributing to the Agege community and is well-suited to take over the leadership role.

Reflecting on his tenure, which is set to end in about two months, Egunjobi listed several accomplishments, including road construction, health center upgrades, public school improvements, vocational training, youth empowerment programs, and a deradicalization initiative for post-EndSARS youth. He also emphasized efforts to maintain peace through employment of security personnel.

On the issue of ethnic divisions in Agege politics, particularly between Awori indigenes and non-indigenes, Egunjobi rejected identity politics, affirming his deep roots in the community and calling such divisions inconsequential.

The endorsement of Speaker Obasa’s son signals strong backing from the current Agege leadership and sets the stage for a highly contested council election in July.
