The 2024 All Federation of African University Sports (FASU) Games concluded on Sunday, October 1, 2024, in Lagos, Nigeria, with the American University of Cairo (AUC), Egypt, emerging as the overall champion.

AUC topped the medals table, winning 46 gold, 24 silver, and 8 bronze medals, leaving Lagos State University (LASU) and the University of Lagos (UNILAG), who co-hosted the event, in second and third places, respectively.

LASU finished with 28 gold, 30 silver, and 26 bronze medals, while UNILAG earned 25 gold, 33 silver, and 40 bronze. The nine-day competition featured 70 universities and over 800 athletes from 14 African countries, including Angola, Zimbabwe, Egypt, Kenya, Zambia, Uganda, Ghana, Mauritius, Botswana, Tanzania, and Guinea.

This was the 11th edition of the FASU Games, and it marked the second time that Nigeria hosted the event, with the first being at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi, 20 years ago. The next edition, scheduled for 2026, will be hosted by the American University of Cairo in Egypt, which has won the coveted gold trophy for three consecutive times.

The closing ceremony at LASU Sports Complex was attended by dignitaries, including royal fathers and university officials. Egypt’s Minister of Sports, Dr. Ashraf Sobhy, who also serves as the FASU President, praised the smooth organization of the games.

He honored the vice-chancellors of LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, and UNILAG, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, for their contributions, granting them the title of FASU Patrons for the next two years.

The governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Mr. Adeniran Kasali, expressed pride in Lagos for hosting such a prestigious event and encouraged the athletes to maintain the spirit of unity and teamwork.

The games’ success was attributed to the collaboration between LASU, UNILAG, the Lagos State Government, corporate sponsors, and over 350 volunteers. The event’s high point was the prize presentation to the top three institutions and a fireworks display signaling the end of the games.

The other universities that completed the top 10 were the University of Ghana, University for Development Studies (Ghana), Ben Idahosa University (Nigeria), University of Cape Coast (Ghana), University of Zambia, Obafemi Awolowo University (Nigeria), and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (Ghana).
