The Afenifere, a prominent Yoruba socio-political organization, has expressed deep concern over the escalating insecurity in Nigeria, particularly in states such as Ogun, Edo, Ekiti, Oyo, Kogi, Zamfara, and Niger. The group has urged President Bola Tinubu to invoke an executive order to establish state and local government police forces to combat the growing threat of banditry and kidnapping.

In a statement, the Afenifere’s spokesman, Ajayi, highlighted the need for decisive action, citing the President’s previous commitments to enhancing security. Despite these assurances, the group notes that recent events have not reflected the desired progress.

Afenifere emphasized the importance of understanding the motivations behind kidnapping and banditry, identifying economic, political, and ideological factors as primary drivers. They stressed that probing these motivations is crucial to developing effective solutions.

The organization called for the immediate deployment of modern security technologies, including close circuit television and drones, to support the fight against insecurity. They also urged the President to take swift action in establishing state and local government police forces through an executive order, pending the completion of constitutional amendments.

Afenifere’s appeal comes amid growing concerns over Nigeria’s security challenges, which have resulted in widespread displacement, economic hardship, and human suffering. The group’s call for decisive action resonates with many Nigerians who eagerly await tangible progress in addressing the nation’s security woes.
