Osun State Governor in Nigeria, Ademola Adeleke, has announced a reduction in the workdays for civil servants in the state, citing the need to alleviate the burden of rising transportation costs. The new directive will see civil servants on different grade levels working fewer days each week.
The announcement, made on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, was contained in a circular from the Head of Service, Samuel Aina Ayanleye, and shared in a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed.
In the circular, Governor Adeleke emphasized that the move is part of his administration’s commitment to the well-being of workers amid Nigeria’s current economic challenges. “This adjustment is aimed at providing relief to our hardworking public servants who are feeling the impact of the rising cost of transportation,” the statement read.
Under the new directive, civil servants on Grade Levels 01 to 10 will now work three days a week, while those on Grade Levels 12 to 17 will work four days. Essential workers, including medical personnel, security officers, political office holders, and accounting officers, are exempt from the new schedule.
The governor also approved the extension of palliative payments to public servants for an additional two months, pending the implementation of the state’s new minimum wage. “The Governor has graciously approved the continuation of payment of the agreed palliatives to public servants for the next two months,” the circular stated.
All Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) are expected to comply with the new schedule and organize workdays for their staff accordingly.
