The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has called for the release of popular TikToker Olumide Ogunsanwo, also known as SeaKing, who was arrested and arraigned for criticizing the cleric on social media.
Adeboye also distanced himself from the arrest, stating that he was unaware of the incident or the individuals responsible.
In a December 2024 TikTok post, SeaKing had criticized Adeboye for instructing his followers to observe a 100-day fast for Nigeria, calling the directive “stupid.” His comment prompted the Concerned Christian Youth Forum to petition the Lagos State Police Command, leading to his arrest, which sparked widespread backlash online.
In a viral video, Adeboye clarified his position, saying, “I heard that someone lambasted me because I asked my people to fast for 100 days. I didn’t ask him or anyone outside the Redeemed Christian Church of God to fast—only my children. But I was told that some people got angry and arrested him. Haaa! Release him. He is fulfilling prophecy.”
Meanwhile, the convener of the Christian youth group, James Adama, admitted responsibility for the arrest, citing concerns over cyber harassment against religious leaders.
Reacting to Adeboye’s call for SeaKing’s release, human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju commended the pastor’s stance, stating that the group behind the arrest could face legal action. He added, “Any pastor who arrests someone for criticizing him is an unbeliever. The police should not have entertained the petition in the first place.”
The case now hinges on the police’s next move following Adeboye’s statement.
