The Oluwo of Iwoland, Osun State, Nigeria, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, has issued a directive requesting the public to address him as “His Imperial Majesty” rather than “His Royal Majesty.” The traditional ruler emphasized that the throne of the Oluwo commands a unique level of respect, being directly linked to the lineage of Oduduwa, the progenitor of the Yoruba people.
In a statement posted on his official Facebook page on Sunday, Oba Akanbi clarified that the Oluwo’s throne is distinct from those of other kings whose titles were elevated from Baale (chieftain or duke) to Oba. He noted that Iwo has always been a kingdom with an original crown from its inception.
“The stool of Oluwo commands the respect of the direct blood of Oduduwa. The Oluwo stool is a crown from inception. Unlike many other stools in Yorubaland, Iwo stool was never upgraded from Baaleship. It is a natural Paramount crown from formation. Oluwo is a viceroy of none. Oluwo has over 30 Obas he crowned,” the monarch stated.
Oba Akanbi further remarked that proper titles must be used in official correspondence with him, warning that any communication that fails to recognize his title as “His Imperial Majesty” will not be acknowledged.
“No General will love to be called a sergeant, likewise no Doctor will answer the name of a nurse,” the Oluwo added, stressing the importance of his title in maintaining the dignity of his office.
This announcement comes as the latest in a series of assertions by the Oluwo, who has consistently called for a deeper appreciation of Iwo’s cultural heritage and royal authority.
