Prominent Nollywood actress Laide Bakare has publicly accused the Nigeria Police of brutality in a viral Instagram post on Sunday, detailing a harrowing encounter along the Ikorodu Expressway.
Bakare, a well-known figure in the Yoruba film industry, described the incident that occurred on Saturday as a shocking display of police misconduct. She claimed that police officers targeted her vehicle, drove it away with her minor child still inside, and extorted money from her.
“For the first time, I experienced the brutal way Nigerians are being treated along that axis,” Bakare wrote. “I cannot imagine how someone with a brain and sanity will drive someone’s car away with a minor in it.”
She alleged that the police specifically targeted “big cars and vulnerable people to exploit and rob,” and reported that they demanded her ATM card, from which they withdrew ₦70,000.
Bakare expressed deep concern for her daughter’s safety and the broader implications of such actions by law enforcement. “A lot is happening in this country that needs to be attended to. My daughter was left terrified because of the incident,” she added.
The actress’s allegations have sparked significant public outcry, with many calling for an investigation into the conduct of the officers involved and a broader examination of police practices in the area.
As of now, there has been no official response from the Nigeria Police Force regarding the incident or Bakare’s accusations.
