The Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has been conferred with the title Amir ul Mulukil Muslimin Fi Bilad, meaning the Commander of Muslim Kings in Yorubaland, Edo, and Delta States. The ceremony, held at the Awujale’s palace in Ijebu-Ode, was organized by the League of Imams and Alfas from the three regions.
During the event, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun praised Oba Adetona for his courageous and compassionate leadership, urging him to use his new role to foster unity and religious tolerance across the country. Abiodun stated, “Your choice for this leadership role as Amir ul Mulukil Muslimin is a symbol of your inclusivity, peace, and justice. You stand as a bridge between tradition and modernity.” He added that Oba Adetona “embodies compassion, wisdom, and integrity,” which makes him deserving of the new position.
Governor Abiodun also announced the commencement of the reconstruction of the Sagamu-Ijebu Ode express road, which has been in a state of disrepair for many years. He revealed, “President Bola Tinubu has approved the reconstruction work,” noting that the road serves 17 southern states and is crucial for regional connectivity.
Speaking earlier, Professor Emeritus and Chief Imam of Gbagura, Abeokuta, Kamaldeen Balogun, called on the Awujale to use his office to promote the development of Islam and the empowerment of Muslims. He also encouraged the monarch to ensure traditional rulers are installed and buried according to their religious beliefs, as he had done in Ogun State.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including the Asiwaju of Ijebuland, Alhaji Adebola Adegunwa, former Deputy Governors Senator Adegbenga Kaka and Alhaja Salmot Badru, and other prominent traditional rulers.
