Brazil’s Supreme Court has lifted the ban on Elon Musk’s social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), which had been blocked in Brazil for over a month due to issues related to disinformation. The decision was made by Judge Alexandre de Moraes after the company complied with several court orders and settled millions of dollars in fines.

“I authorize the immediate return of the activities of the platform,” said Judge Moraes in his ruling. He also gave Brazil’s communications regulator 24 hours to restore access to X for its millions of users in the country.

The platform had been suspended in August after it failed to remove accounts accused of spreading disinformation during Brazil’s 2022 election campaign and neglected to appoint a new legal representative in Brazil. Musk criticized the ruling at the time, calling Moraes an “evil dictator,” but later complied with the court’s demands, including paying fines totaling $5.2 million.

The clash between Brazil’s Supreme Court and X, which centered on the balance between freedom of expression and corporate responsibility, has garnered international attention.
