President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria has issued a directive to the Nigerian police to urgently restore peace and stability in Rivers State, following incidents of arson and explosions sparked by the local government council election held last Saturday.
In a statement released on Monday, October 7, 2024, by his special adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President expressed deep concern over the escalating violence. He called on political leaders and their supporters to de-escalate tensions and avoid further destructive actions.
President Tinubu emphasized the need to protect public institutions, noting, “Government facilities built with public funds must be safeguarded from vandalism. Self-help has no place in a democratic system, especially after 25 years of continuous democracy.”
He also urged Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other political actors in the state to exercise restraint, reminding them that disputes related to the election should be settled through the judiciary. “The judiciary can resolve all political disputes, and the outcome of this election should be no exception,” the President said.
As tensions rise in Rivers State, the call for calm and adherence to the rule of law grows stronger, with President Tinubu pushing for a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
