Former Nigerian Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke’s lawsuit challenging the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) final forfeiture order on her assets was delayed on Monday, October 7, 2024 at a Federal High Court in Abuja.
The case was scheduled before Justice Inyang Ekwo but could not proceed as the judge was attending a seminar. The next hearing is set for November 21, 2024.
Alison-Madueke, represented by her counsel, Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, had filed a suit seeking an extension of time to challenge the EFCC’s public notice to auction her seized properties. She claims her assets were forfeited without proper jurisdiction and that her right to a fair hearing was violated, as she was not served with court documents or charges.
The EFCC, however, countered her claims, arguing that due process was followed, and the forfeiture was legally valid. The commission recovered $153 million and over 80 properties from the former minister, who has been living in the UK since her tenure ended in 2015.
