The Action People’s Party (APP) has emerged victorious in 22 out of the 23 chairmanship positions in the recently concluded local government elections in Rivers State, Nigeria.

The results were announced on Saturday by the Chief Election Officer of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Justice Adolphus Enebeli, in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

However, the announcement for Etche Local Government Area has been temporarily suspended as the collation of results is still ongoing. “The results for Etche LGA will be declared later, alongside the results for the 319 councillorship seats,” Justice Enebeli stated.

In a related development, two individuals sustained bullet wounds in Igwuruta community, Ikwerre Local Government Area, amid a clash between security personnel and youths allegedly loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike. The youths, led by Peoples Democratic Party leader Obinna Ekem, claimed they were enforcing a Federal High Court ruling that prevented the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from releasing the 2023 voters register to RSIEC.

According to Ekem, the youths were ensuring compliance with the court order when security operatives attached to federal lawmaker Boniface Emerengwa opened fire on them. The situation remains tense as the community continues to respond to the election events.
