President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of teachers, emphasizing their critical role in shaping the future of the country.

Speaking in Abuja during the 2024 World Teachers’ Day celebration, themed “Valuing Teacher Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education,” Tinubu assured that the government would prioritize the needs of teachers and ensure they receive the support they deserve.

Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, Tinubu highlighted the importance of teacher education in promoting professionalism within the field. “As a teacher, you must acquire teacher education to possess the specialised knowledge, skills, and attitude needed to perform the task of teaching in the school system,” he said, adding that “competencies and professionalism” are essential for teachers to thrive.

The President also acknowledged the significant contributions of international development partners in supporting the education sector, and he pledged that his administration would leave “no stone unturned” in ensuring quality education, which he linked to women’s empowerment, poverty reduction, and national unity.

Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, reiterated the government’s commitment to empowering teachers through improved training, professional development, and access to modern resources. “We are working diligently to improve teacher training, professional development, and working conditions across the country,” Sununu said. He called on state governments, private sector partners, and civil society to collaborate in creating an education system where teachers are fully supported.

In recognition of their service, outstanding teachers were presented with car gifts and other awards during the event.
