Hundreds of stakeholders, including prominent members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Nigeria, Chief Nyesom Wike, took to the streets of Port Harcourt to protest Governor Siminialayi Fubara’s decision to proceed with the disputed local government elections.
The protestors first assembled at the Polo Club in Yenagoa before marching along the popular Aba Road in Port Harcourt, holding banners and placards urging the governor to respect a Federal High Court ruling that cancelled the elections.
Many of the protesters voiced their concerns about the legality of the exercise, with one banner reading, “Fubara, obey court orders!”
In a related development, members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were also reportedly gathering at the party’s secretariat in Port Harcourt, preparing for a similar protest against the election. The controversy surrounding the polls has heightened tensions in the state, as various groups continue to express their opposition to Governor Fubara’s decision.
