A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama, Nigeria has issued a public summons for immediate past Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, to appear in court on October 24 to answer to a fresh 16-count charge filed against him.

The charges, brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), involve allegations of criminal breach of trust amounting to N110.4 billion.

Justice Maryanne Anenih, in a ruling on Thursday, October 3, 2024, granted the EFCC’s request for the public summons after the anti-graft agency reported its inability to serve Bello with the charges, which were filed on September 24.

The court directed the EFCC to publish the summons in a widely circulated newspaper and post copies at Bello’s last known address, as well as in conspicuous places within court premises.

Bello’s arraignment, along with two other defendants—Umar Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu—had been scheduled for Thursday but was delayed due to his absence. Justice Anenih emphasized the importance of ensuring that the ex-governor is properly notified of the charges, which include conspiracy and criminal breach of trust.

The EFCC’s allegations against Bello have generated significant attention, with civil society organizations, such as one urging the Inspector General of Police to arrest Bello within 14 days, and anti-corruption groups accusing the EFCC of selective justice. The case has also sparked discussions about potential political interference, as some groups claim the EFCC’s actions are politically motivated.

The court ordered that Bello appear on October 24 for arraignment, failing which further legal actions may be taken to ensure compliance.
