Kemi Nandap, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), has been appointed as the Chairperson of the ECOWAS Heads of Immigration Forum. This announcement was made in a statement by NIS Public Relations Officer Kenneth Udo on Tuesday in Abuja.
Nandap’s appointment took place during a recent meeting in Banjul, Gambia, where representatives from 13 ECOWAS member states gathered to address migration and mobility issues within the region. The forum focused on implementing the ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card (ENBIC) and abolishing the 90-day stay limit and residence permits for community citizens.
ENBIC aims to replace the current ECOWAS Travel Certificate and Residence Permit, facilitating easier movement, residence, and business within the region while maintaining national security. Nandap highlighted the need for accelerated policy implementation to boost regional integration and address pressing concerns like irregular migration, human trafficking, and border security.
The forum concluded with the adoption of a roadmap for the gradual implementation of agreed initiatives to further integrate the region.
