As Nigeria marked its 64th Independence Anniversary, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, delivered a message of resilience to Nigerians, particularly the working class, urging them not to lose hope despite enduring broken promises, exploitation, and corruption by the government.
In his statement, Ajaero commended the sacrifices and determination of Nigerians, who continue to bear the brunt of economic and political challenges. He highlighted the resilience of the downtrodden, stating, “Despite serial acts of betrayal from the political leadership, the spirit of the Nigerian people remains unbroken.”
The NLC leader further called on citizens to stand up for their rights within the boundaries of the law, encouraging peaceful protests against injustice and the undermining of democratic values. “It should be apparent to the citizenry that the leading political elite are not ready to do the right thing except they are compelled to do so,” he said.
In a strong caution to the political class, Ajaero warned that the days of circumventing democracy and exploiting the people’s goodwill can no longer continue unchecked. He urged the leadership to turn over a new leaf, emphasizing that “undermining democratic institutions can no longer be business as usual.”
Ajaero’s message comes at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with economic hardship, political instability, and dissatisfaction with governance, further stressing the need for accountability and transparency from those in power.
