Edo Queens have been crowned champions of the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) for the first time in their history. The Benin-based team secured the title after a 1-1 draw against Bayelsa Queens in the final match of the NWFL Super Six playoff, amassing 10 points from five matches.

Edo Queens took the lead in the 29th minute with an acrobatic strike from Emem Essien, but Bayelsa Queens equalized early in the second half through Zainab Olopade. Despite the draw, Rivers Angels’ 1-1 tie with Heartland Queens on the final day ensured that Edo Queens maintained their lead to clinch the championship at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Bayelsa State.

Edo Queens’ head coach, Moses Aduku, expressed elation over the historic achievement, noting that the team’s hard work and dedication paid off.

The victory means Edo Queens will represent Nigeria in the West African Football Union (WAFU) championship, which serves as the qualifier for the next season’s CAF Women’s Champions League.

NWFL celebrated the moment on Twitter, stating, “Long wait finally over! Edo Queens crowned the Nigeria Women’s Football League Premiership champions for the first time in their history!”
