Students and staff members of the Federal University Gusau in Zamfara State, Nigeria, have been freed after spending seven months in captivity, following their abduction during a bandit attack in February 2024.

Security analyst and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama confirmed their release in a report via social media.

“Abducted students of Federal University Gusau and staff regain freedom,” the report stated. While the exact circumstances surrounding their release remain unclear, sources indicated that security forces played a pivotal role in securing the victims’ freedom.

The kidnapping occurred during an attack in the Gusau area, where bandits stormed students’ off-campus residences around 4:00 am, targeting three hostels and predominantly female students. Abubakar Sani, a local resident, recounted the incident, stating, “The bandits invaded the area, and it was a terrifying experience for everyone.”

The news brings relief to families and the academic community who have been anxiously awaiting the safe return of their loved ones. Zagazola added, “After spending an extended period in captivity, it has been confirmed that all the abducted individuals have returned in good health,” He said.
