In an overnight operation aimed at curbing electoral violence, the Nigeria Police Force has arrested two political thugs in Edo State and recovered firearms. This development comes as part of the force’s intensified efforts to ensure a peaceful governorship election.
According to a statement from the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the suspects, identified as 43-year-old Edwin Obanor and 41-year-old Audu Tajudeen, were apprehended after a tip-off. Obanor was arrested in Oredo Ward 4 around 9 p.m. on the eve of the election, while Tajudeen, a PDP member from Ugbogbo Quarters, Igara Akoko, Edo, was also taken into custody shortly afterward.
A search of their belongings revealed three cut-to-size locally fabricated pistols in Obanor’s possession, and one locally made gun was recovered from Tajudeen.
“These arrests are a testament to the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring a peaceful electoral process,” Adejobi stated. “The police and other supporting security agencies will not tolerate any form of violence or disorderliness during the election in Edo State.”
The suspects are currently in custody and will face charges accordingly. The police have assured the public of their ongoing efforts to safeguard lives and property, urging citizens to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
