The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has announced comprehensive security measures ahead of Saturday’s governorship election in Edo State. To prevent potential disruptions, the IGP has ordered the restriction of all vehicular movement on roads, waterways, and other forms of transportation from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday.
Exceptions have been made for essential services, including accredited media personnel, electoral officials, ambulances, and emergency responders. The IGP has also implemented measures to maintain the integrity of the electoral process, including a ban on security aides and escorts accompanying VIPs to polling booths and collation centers.
Unauthorized security personnel and quasi-security outfits are prohibited from operating during the election, and the use of sirens by unauthorized vehicles is strictly forbidden. Special attention will be given to individuals with disabilities, pregnant women, nursing mothers, the aged, and those with mobility challenges, ensuring accessible polling stations.
Citizens are encouraged to report suspicious activities or incidents to designated election lines: DIG Frank Mba (07025000383), AIG Benneth Igwe (09085000029), and the general control room (08077773721 and 08037646272). A joint control room, manned by police and relevant agencies, has been activated to respond promptly to incidents.
The IGP urges political parties, candidates, and supporters to conduct themselves responsibly and comply with electoral laws. Any violations or attempts to disrupt the electoral process will be met with the full extent of the law. The Nigeria Police Force is committed to promoting a safe and democratic environment, ensuring fair and peaceful elections.
