Nigerian filmmaker Pascal Atuma highlighted on Thursday, September 19, 2024, that the budget for an entire Nollywood movie is far less than the pre-production cost for Hollywood films.
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Atuma explained that in Los Angeles, even low-budget films start at around $3 million, while Nollywood has yet to produce a movie with a $1 million budget.
Atuma further elaborated on the financial challenges, citing high costs, such as business-class flights for stars, which can reach $8,000 per ticket. He emphasized the need for filmmakers to balance the creative aspect with profitability, noting that the entertainment industry is both “show” and “business.”
Discussing his latest movie Imported Wives, Atuma shared that it explores cultural clashes in marriages when Nigerians relocate abroad with wives from home, reflecting on the “Japa” syndrome. The movie stars notable actors like Omoni Oboli, Patience Ozokwor, and Nancy Isime.
Atuma also advised aspiring filmmakers to be patient, resilient, and committed to the craft, stressing that success requires dedication and a willingness to learn.
