As the September 21 governorship election in Edo State approaches, Asue Ighodalo, the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has emphasized that the decision on who will govern Edo State, Nigeria, lies solely with its residents, not with PDP heavyweight Nyesom Wike or any other external figure.

Speaking on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” program, Ighodalo stated, “The choice of who succeeds Governor Godwin Obaseki is not for Nyesom Wike or anyone else to decide. It is for the people of Edo State to determine.”

This statement follows comments made by Wike last Friday, where he declared his lack of support for Ighodalo. Wike criticized his previous support for Obaseki, saying, “I supported him (Obaseki) the last time, what happened? I became a stupid man.”

In response, Ighodalo addressed Wike’s remarks, suggesting that Wike’s position may have changed and he is free to alter his stance. “If Governor Wike has decided to change his mind, that’s fine. The decision about the next governor of Edo State is for its citizens, not for anyone else, whether they are former governors or ministers.”

Ighodalo further asserted, “I fear no man; I only fear God. The governance of Edo State will be decided by the people who live here and hold PVCs, with the support of God Almighty,” He said.
