The United States military has officially completed its withdrawal from Niger as of September 15, 2024. This comes after Niger’s military leaders, who took power in a coup in 2023, ended military cooperation agreements with both the US and France.

Over the past decade, the US stationed more than 1,000 troops in Niger to support anti-terrorism operations across the Sahel region, with major bases in Niamey and Agadez.

Following the coup, which ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, Niger’s military regime has shifted its alliances towards Russia, while also strengthening ties with Turkey and Iran. The withdrawal marks a significant shift in the fight against jihadist groups such as ISIS and Al-Qaeda, as the Sahel nations, including Niger, face ongoing violence from militant groups.

Despite the withdrawal, the US remains interested in maintaining shared security goals with Niger. Major General Kenneth Ekman has indicated that the US is open to discussions about future security collaborations based on Niger’s needs.
