On Saturday morning, panic engulfed the student community at Ekosodin, Edo State, as a storey building on Ekhator Street in Benin collapsed during a downpour. Ekosodin, which borders the University of Benin, houses many students who live there due to accommodation shortages on campus.
Some students trapped in the rubble were rescued, with several injured and rushed to the hospital. A university rescue team continues to search for remaining victims, including a student who called for help from under the rubble.
Rescue efforts are being coordinated by the Dean of Student Affairs, and the State Fire Service has deployed trucks to assist. The university has yet to release an official statement on the cause of the collapse or the exact number of victims.
