Comoros President Azali Assoumani was injured in a knife attack on Friday, according to a statement from the government. The incident occurred in Salimani-Itsandra, an area near the capital Moroni.
“The head of state was a victim of an attack,” government spokeswoman Fatima Ahamadael told AFP. “Thank God, his life is not in danger.”
Sources close to the presidency confirmed that Assoumani was attending a funeral when he was stabbed, though his injuries were minor. One source noted, “President Azali Assoumani was slightly injured by a knife but received appropriate care and is out of danger.”
The attacker, described as a young gendarme who was recruited in 2022, has been arrested. No further details were immediately available.
Assoumani, 65, a former military ruler, came to power in 1999 through a coup and was re-elected earlier this year after a disputed election followed by deadly protests.
