Sudan’s rich archaeological heritage is being plundered amid ongoing conflict, with looters taking valuable items from museums and selling them online. The war between rival generals, which began in April 2023, has resulted in the looting of museums, heritage sites, and private collections, according to UNESCO.
The Sudan National Museum in Khartoum, which houses prehistoric artefacts, Pharaonic, and Nubian pieces, has been significantly looted. Objects are reportedly being transported to areas near South Sudan. UNESCO has urged the public and art markets to refrain from trading in Sudanese items and plans to provide training to law enforcement in the region to prevent further theft. Additionally, looted items have surfaced online, with experts raising concerns about the damage to larger statues if mishandled.
The situation highlights the ongoing threat to Sudan’s cultural heritage amid the conflict, with international efforts underway to safeguard the country’s precious artefacts.
