President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria met with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace in London on September 11, 2024. The meeting, described as private, focused on reinforcing the strong relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
According to a statement by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, both leaders discussed global and regional matters, including the urgent issue of climate change. They explored collaborative opportunities ahead of the COP 29 Summit in Azerbaijan and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa.
President Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to addressing climate change while ensuring the nation’s energy security objectives. He and King Charles shared ideas on innovative approaches to climate financing and expressed mutual interest in strengthening partnerships between Nigeria, Africa, and the Commonwealth.
This was the first meeting between the two leaders since their encounter at the COP 28 Climate Summit in Dubai last year. The meeting was at King Charles’ request.
