A devastating fuel tanker explosion on the Agaie-Bida Road in Niger State, Nigeria has claimed over 30 lives and burned more than 50 cows.
The tragic incident occurred around 12:30 am on Sunday, September 8, 2024, near the Dendo Community, 2 kilometers along the Lapai-Agaie road.
The explosion was triggered when a petrol tanker collided with a trailer truck carrying travelers and cattle from Kano to Lagos. The accident also involved two other vehicles—a crane truck and a pickup van.
Mallam Abdullahi Baba-Arab, the Director-General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), confirmed the incident in a statement, saying, “Over 30 people have already been confirmed dead, with more than 50 cattle burnt alive. NSEMA’s Rapid Response Team (RRT), in conjunction with LGEMCs, is still at the scene conducting search and rescue operations, as more bodies remain trapped inside the vehicles.”
This unfortunate event comes barely 24 hours after a separate tanker explosion in Ibadan, Oyo State, which resulted in three vehicles, one tricycle, and two motorcycles catching fire.
