
Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan, known for his 2013 breakthrough in hip-hop and hit songs like “Type of Way” and “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh),” has died at the age of 33.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed that Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta notified them of his death on Thursday. The cause of death has not been released, and an autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
Rich Homie Quan, whose real name is Dequantes Devontay Lamar, gained widespread recognition with his single “Type of Way” in 2013, which later became an anthem for Michigan State University’s football team. He was celebrated as a member of XXL magazine’s Freshman Class in 2014, alongside artists like Chance the Rapper and Ty Dolla $ign.
Many in the music community have expressed their condolences. Rapper Boosie Badazz shared on social media that the two had “GOOD ASS MEMORIES TOGETHER N THAT GO ALWAYS BRING A SMILE TO MY FACE.” Former Michigan State football coach Mark Dantonio also paid tribute, recalling how “Type of Way” became a celebratory anthem for his team.
Rich Homie Quan was known for collaborating with prominent artists, including 2 Chainz, Young Thug, Gucci Mane, and Trinidad James. He received multiple nominations for BET and BET Hip Hop Awards during his career.
His family and representatives have not yet commented on his passing.
