MMA superstar Conor McGregor has hinted at a potential run for the presidency in Ireland’s 2025 elections, declaring himself the “most qualified” candidate to represent the Irish people. McGregor made his intentions known in a statement released on Thursday, September 5, 2024, detailing his political ambitions and his plans if elected.
“As President, I hold the power to summon the Dáil [Éireann] as well as dissolve it,” McGregor said. “So, as I said before, I would have all the answers the people of Ireland seek from these thieves of the working man, these disrupters of the family unit, these destructors of small businesses, and on and on and on!”
The UFC fighter continued, expressing his disdain for the current political climate, “These charlatans in their positions of power would be summoned to answer to the people of Ireland, and I would have it done by day end. Or I would be left with no choice but to dissolve the Dáil entirely.”
McGregor, who has been vocal on various political issues in the past, seems serious about entering the political arena, though the timing has raised questions given his upcoming fight with Michael Chandler.
Back in 2018, when asked about the possibility of a political career, McGregor showed some interest, and Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar commented that “stranger things have happened.” McGregor’s latest statement leaves no doubt about his ambitions, as he concluded, “Ireland needs an active President employed wholly by the people of Ireland. It is me. I am the only logical choice. 2025 is upcoming…”
If McGregor follows through on his political ambitions, it could put his fight plans in jeopardy, raising doubts about whether his anticipated bout with Chandler will proceed as scheduled.
Whether his political move is a genuine attempt to lead or just another bold statement, McGregor’s declaration has already stirred public discourse, adding a new twist to the upcoming election season in Ireland.
