Nigerian singer and songwriter Korede Bello has shed light on his decision to leave Mavin Records, the label founded by renowned producer Don Jazzy.
Speaking during a recent interview with Hip TV, hosted by reality star Kim Oprah, Bello explained that he left the label in 2021 to prioritize personal growth and self-discovery.
Reflecting on his departure, the “Godwin” hitmaker stated, “I was at a point in my life where I needed to metamorphose, to explore my inner worth, to do introspection, understand myself, understand meaning more, and reconnect with my ‘why.’”
Bello, who joined Mavin Records in 2014, revealed that he began to feel like a commodity rather than an artist. “I started to feel like a product, like something that was just there [at Mavin Records] to make money. You lose sight of what matters when you chase after the next song, the next hit, or whatever it is that can get you into the conversation,” he said, adding that many artists become trapped in this endless cycle.
His decision marks a shift away from the constant pursuit of hit songs, allowing him to focus more on his personal and artistic development.
Born on February 29, 1996, in Lagos, Korede Bello is known for his unique voice and energetic performances. He rose to prominence in 2014 with the release of his chart-topping single “Godwin,” a mix of gospel and pop that became an anthem across Nigeria. Bello’s style blends Afrobeat, pop, and contemporary R&B, and he has received several awards, including the Nigeria Entertainment Award for Best New Act in 2015. Beyond music, he is also a youth ambassador for the Nigeria Police Force and an advocate for social causes.
