Investigative journalist David Hundeyin has explained why the Nigeria Police Force has named him as an accomplice in the legal case involving whistleblower Isaac Tamunobifiri, known as PIDOM.

During an interview with News Central Television on Wednesday, September 12, 2024, Hundeyin stated that the accusation stemmed from his efforts to expose corruption, which he believes the current administration views as a threat.

He alleged that the authorities are trying to discredit him and have his name added to an Interpol notice to compromise his international refugee status.

“There were several attempts by the National Intelligence Agency to abduct me,” Hundeyin revealed. “I had to move between Ghana, Kenya, and finally the United Kingdom to escape these threats. It’s the price one pays for speaking the truth when it’s not convenient.”

Hundeyin further disclosed that in 2023, the National Intelligence Agency made several attempts to abduct him abroad, forcing him to relocate to the UK for safety. “They tried to render me stateless,” he claimed. “There was an attempt to abduct me from Ghana, then from Kenya, and finally, I fled to the United Kingdom.”

Reflecting on being declared an accomplice in PIDOM’s trial, Hundeyin said, “I anticipated this and went public to avoid being implicated in a criminal investigation designed to discredit me and target other political opponents and whistleblowers.”

The journalist alleged that PIDOM had been sprayed with a toxic substance while in FCID custody, which has caused severe breathing difficulties. “He cannot breathe properly; you can hear it in his voice. Clearly, something is wrong with him,” Hundeyin stated.

The police spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, had earlier announced that PIDOM was arrested following a petition from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. Adejobi claimed that PIDOM resisted arrest, destroyed his phone, and was eventually charged with several crimes, including money laundering and cybercrime.

PIDOM remains detained at the Kuje correctional facility and has been arraigned on multiple charges by the Inspector General of Police.
