The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has called off its seven-day nationwide warning strike and directed its members to resume work on Monday, September 2, 2024. The strike was initiated in response to the abduction of their colleague, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, who was kidnapped eight months ago along with her husband and nephew.
NARD President, Dr. Dele Abdullahi, announced the suspension of the strike and stated that the association would review the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing their demands in the next three weeks. “We are suspending the strike now. We will be meeting to review the progress the government has made,” he said.
Popoola, a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna, was abducted on December 27, 2023. While her husband was released in March, she and her nephew remain in captivity. Despite threats from the Federal Government to invoke the ‘no work, no pay’ policy, the resident doctors were unmoved and continued their protest.
NARD is closely monitoring the government’s actions over the coming weeks to ensure their demands are met.
