The Nigeria Police Force has issued another invitation to the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, and the union’s Secretary General, Emmanuel Ugboaja.

The latest invitation letter, dated August 28, 2024, was issued just a day before Ajaero honored an earlier police summons at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

According to the letter, signed by CP Rufus Alajide on behalf of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Department, this recent invitation is part of ongoing investigations into alleged “criminal intimidation, malicious damage to properties, and conducts likely to cause breach of public peace.” The letter further requested Ajaero and Ugboaja to appear for an interview with the Deputy Inspector General of Police on September 5, 2024, at 11 a.m. in Abuja.

Ajaero, who previously appeared at the Force Headquarters with human rights lawyer Femi Falana and others, returned to the NLC headquarters, where he addressed members of the labour union. He declared that the NLC is the most patriotic organization in the country, vowing that the union would remain committed to its patriotic values despite challenges.

“The labour movement is worth dying for because of its patriotism and commitment. We are more patriotic than any other institution in this country,” Ajaero stated. He described the police invitation as a common hazard for labour leaders, referencing his experience under the late General Sani Abacha’s regime in the 1990s.

Ajaero expressed gratitude to NLC members for their unwavering support, emphasizing that the union would continue its struggle for better welfare for Nigerian workers without being distracted by external pressures.
