The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced September 14, 2024, as the final deadline for linking Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs) to National Identity Numbers (NINs). According to a statement by Reuben Muoka, NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, all Mobile Network Operators are directed to complete the verification and linkage process by this date.
Starting September 15, 2024, any SIM not linked to a valid NIN will be considered non-compliant. Currently, over 153 million SIMs have been successfully linked, representing a 96% compliance rate, up from 69.7% in January 2024.
The NCC urges Nigerians who have not yet completed the linkage or encountered verification issues to update their details with their service providers before the deadline. Self-service portals are also available for this purpose.
The NCC emphasizes that selling or purchasing pre-registered SIMs is a criminal offense, punishable by fines and imprisonment. The commission is committed to working with security agencies to curb such practices, enhance digital security, and ensure the integrity of mobile numbers in Nigeria.
