Former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, currently serving a 10-year prison sentence in the UK for human trafficking, is now facing a new investigation by the London Metropolitan Police. This development was revealed in a documentary by Chude Jideonwo titled “Daniel vs Ekweremadu,” although specific details about the case remain under wraps due to the ongoing investigation.
Part one of the two-part docu-series, written and directed by award-winning filmmaker and TV host Chude Jideonwo, was released on Friday, August 23. According to a spokesperson for the police, Alexandra Meek, the investigation involves a case linked to Ekweremadu. Meek stated in an email featured in the documentary, “With regards to the live investigation, which is linked – On Tuesday, 8 November 2022 detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime arrested a woman on suspicion of conspiracy to exploit for the purposes of organ harvesting. The woman, who is in her 50s, has been released under investigation. Enquiries remain ongoing.”
Chude Jideonwo’s documentary explores Ekweremadu’s fall from grace, chronicling his journey from a prominent Nigerian senator to his imprisonment in the UK following his conviction under the UK’s Modern Slavery Law. Ekweremadu became the first person sentenced under this law, alongside his wife Beatrice and their doctor-friend, Obinna Obeta, for their involvement in organ harvesting.
The documentary uses the pseudonym “Daniel” for the victim-survivor of the initial conviction, adhering to a directive from the judge to keep the individual’s real name undisclosed. “‘Daniel vs Ekweremadu’ tells the story of Senator Ekweremadu’s dramatic downfall and provides exclusive insights from British prosecutors, police, and the victim-survivor’s family,” Jideonwo explained. The series, filmed across Nigeria and the United Kingdom, is a first-of-its-kind thriller-style documentary from a West African independent studio, offering a deep dive into the complex legal and personal saga surrounding Ekweremadu’s case.
Ekweremadu, once a powerful figure in Nigerian politics, now faces further scrutiny as the Metropolitan Police continue their investigations, signaling ongoing legal troubles for the former deputy senate president.
