The District Head of Gatawa in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State, Nigeria Isa Bawa, has died in captivity after being abducted by bandits.

His death was confirmed by Almustapha Boza, a lawmaker representing Sabon Birni North in the State House of Assembly, who disclosed that the team sent to deliver the ransom returned with Bawa’s son but found the monarch already deceased.

The ransom, consisting of ₦60 million and brand new motorcycles, was agreed upon, but the bandits did not communicate as expected. Bawa was kidnapped alongside his son, brother, and six others along the Sokoto-Sabon Birni Road.

The late 74-year-old monarch had previously called on the Sokoto State Government for help in a video that circulated on social media, pleading for his release.
