The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced a $27 million humanitarian aid package for Nigeria as part of a broader $536 million assistance initiative directed towards Sub-Saharan Africa.
This contribution, aimed at providing critical support to vulnerable populations, is part of the U.S. Government’s ongoing efforts to address humanitarian challenges across the continent.
In a statement released on Tuesday by the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, the aid was highlighted as a vital component of the country’s commitment to offering life-saving assistance and protection to those in need. U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, underscored the significance of this funding, stating, “This assistance will make a real difference in the lives of those most in need in Nigeria and across the continent.”
The comprehensive aid package was formally unveiled by Uzra Zeya, the Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights. The new funding increases the total U.S. humanitarian assistance to Sub-Saharan Africa for Fiscal Year 2024 to nearly $3.7 billion.
The aid is set to address the pressing needs of refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced persons, stateless individuals, and others affected by conflict across the region. A significant portion of the funds will focus on crisis areas such as the Sahel, with efforts aimed at creating sustainable solutions, including voluntary returns and refugee integration.
Ambassador Mills further emphasized the U.S.’s enduring support for Nigeria, saying, “This $27 million in aid demonstrates the United States’ unwavering commitment to supporting Nigeria in addressing humanitarian challenges. We stand with Nigeria in its efforts to provide for vulnerable populations and build resilience against food insecurity and climate change impacts.”
The statement added that the funds will be distributed through the State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, as well as USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, ensuring that those most in need receive the necessary support.
