Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, Nigeria has revealed that the violent protesters who participated in the recent EndBadGovernance demonstrations have carted away important corruption trial documents related to the former governor and current APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
The documents were stored at the Kano State High Court, which was among the locations vandalized during the protests against hunger and poor governance.
Governor Yusuf, during an assessment visit to the damaged court on Wednesday, expressed concern over the loss of the case files, which were critical to ongoing corruption trials involving Ganduje. The governor, accompanied by the Attorney General, Haruna Isah Dederi, and other judiciary officials, condemned the incident, describing it as a deliberate attempt by “enemies of Kano State” to obstruct justice.
“It is very unfortunate that enemies of Kano State hired undesirable elements to vandalize one of the historic public buildings with a mission of averting corruption charges against the Acting National Chairman of APC and former governor of the state, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, his family, and aides,” the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, stated in a press release.
The governor also pointed out that the miscreants had destroyed several units of the High Court, including the office of the Chief Judge, resulting in a loss exceeding one billion naira. Office equipment, vehicles, and other essential materials necessary for the court’s functioning were either stolen or destroyed.
Governor Yusuf called on the youths to avoid being used by detractors for violent purposes and to focus on skill acquisition for a better future. He assured that the judiciary, as the last hope of the common man, must be protected at all costs. The governor also directed the immediate rehabilitation of the court building and the deployment of adequate security to ensure effective justice delivery in the state.
