In a ruling that has sent shockwaves through Thailand’s political landscape, the Constitutional Court on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, removed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin from office.

The court found Srettha guilty of ethical misconduct related to the appointment of a minister who had a prior criminal conviction.

Judge Punya Udchachon, who read the court’s decision, stated, “The court voted five to four in favor of removing Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin from office due to a violation of ethical standards in appointing a convicted individual to ministerial office.”

This decision is expected to plunge Thailand into a period of political instability as the country grapples with the fallout of this high-profile dismissal.
