The Federal High Court in Abuja, Nigeria has granted a two-week bail to DCP Abba Kyari, the former commander of the Force Intelligence Response Team, after 27 months in detention. The bail allows Kyari to return home and conclude his mother’s burial rites.

Kyari has been detained since February 14, 2022, on drug-related charges filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). The court has scheduled May 31 for the determination of his bail application in the ongoing trial.

Abba Kyari’s mother, Yachilla, passed away on May 5, 2024. Despite his inability to attend her burial, which took place the same day in Borno State according to Islamic rites, residents of the state turned out in large numbers to pay their respects.

This temporary release comes after Kyari’s prolonged detention and amidst ongoing legal proceedings concerning his alleged involvement in drug trafficking.
