President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria has officially signed the judicial office holders’ salaries and allowances bill into law.
The announcement was made by Senator Basheer Lado, Special Adviser to the President on Senate Matters, in a statement released in Abuja on Tuesday, August 13, 2024.
“This extraordinary move underscores Mr. President’s absolute prioritization of the welfare of Nigerian workers above all else,” Lado remarked, highlighting Tinubu’s recent decision to pause a Federal Executive Council meeting to sign the new National Minimum Wage Bill of N70,000 into law.
The new Act revises the salaries, allowances, and other benefits for judicial officers, effectively separating them from the provisions that apply to other political and public office holders. “The amendment of the Certain Political, Public and Judicial Office Holders (Salaries and Allowances, etc.) Act, No.6, 2002 (as amended) provides for the deletion of provisions relating to Judicial Office Holders from the aforementioned Act,” Lado explained.
Describing the signing of the bill as a “landmark achievement,” Lado praised President Tinubu for his dedication to the welfare of Nigerian workers. “This landmark decision reflects Mr. President’s profound dedication to ensuring that every salary earner in Nigeria, especially those serving in vital and strategic roles, receives the recognition and compensation they deserve,” he said.
He also noted, “By prioritizing the financial well-being of our judicial officers, Mr. President is not only reinforcing the integrity of our justice system but also setting a new standard for leadership that truly values the hard work and sacrifices of all Nigerian workers.”
Lado commended Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abass, and the members of the 10th National Assembly for their efforts in passing and transmitting the executive bill. He urged judicial office holders to redouble their efforts in ensuring justice is served, especially now that their welfare has been enhanced. “The judiciary remains the hope of the common man, and it is hoped that Nigerians seeking justice get it irrespective of their status in life,” Lado added.
This move follows other recent actions by President Tinubu aimed at improving the lives of Nigerian workers, including the recent assent to the new National Minimum Wage Bill. “Under President Tinubu’s administration, the welfare of our workers has become a central pillar of national progress,” Lado concluded.
