Former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has sharply criticized the character of Nigeria’s current leaders, asserting that many of those in government should be behind bars. Obasanjo made this remark on Friday, August 9, 2024 in Abeokuta, Ogun State, while hosting six members of the House of Representatives who co-sponsored a bill advocating for a single six-year term and rotational presidency between the North and South.

During the meeting, Obasanjo expressed deep concern about the state of Nigeria’s leadership, stating, “With all due respect, most of those in government should right now be behind bars or in gallows.”

He also reflected on his time in office, lamenting that subsequent administrations failed to build on the foundation he laid. “The issue for me is that we must decarbonize our brains and mentality. Whether it’s a single term of six years or two terms of four years, if the character of those in government doesn’t change, nothing will improve,” Obasanjo argued.

He further emphasized that Nigeria’s core issue lies within its leadership, and unless a fundamental shift occurs in how leaders approach governance, policy changes such as the proposed six-year single term will not bring the desired improvements.
