The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has responded to a viral video showing a Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) officer soliciting money from a passenger at an international airport. The incident has sparked outrage and highlighted issues within Nigeria’s public service sector.

In a statement released on Wednesday, FAAN’s Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, condemned the officer’s behavior, labeling it as “totally unacceptable.” Kuku emphasized that this conduct does not represent the standards FAAN aims to uphold at its terminals.

“I have seen the disturbing video circulating of a Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) official begging a passenger for money at the airport,” Kuku stated. “This behavior is completely unacceptable and does not reflect the passenger experience we hope to provide at our terminals.”

FAAN reported that the officer has been removed from his duty post and is currently undergoing disciplinary action by the NIS.

Kuku reassured the public of FAAN’s commitment to professionalism and integrity among airport personnel. She urged passengers to report similar incidents and seek support through provided contact channels.

“We are committed to maintaining the integrity and professionalism of all personnel working at our airports. Your safety and comfort are our top priorities, and we will take every necessary step to ensure a pleasant travel experience for everyone,” she added.

Public reaction to the video has been intense, with many Nigerians expressing disappointment over the officer’s actions, viewing it as a reflection of deeper systemic issues. Some suggest that better compensation for officers could prevent such behaviors and restore dignity to public service roles.
